Reason 157: Root Beer Floats

Monday, December 12, 2011

Imagine this....

Brick Oven Root beer
BYU Creamery Ice Cream "Lavell's Vanilla"

All while Watching "The Christmas Story."

This is the life :)

Reason 156: Current Weather Conditions

Saturday, December 10, 2011.

It is 36 degrees and blue skies today.
And I don't hate it.

I went on a run by the railroad tracks.
And I doubled the miles I planned on doing.

Snow is nice while it is falling, but it makes life so inconvenient.
Turns black, slushy, and icy.  Hard to drive and walk.
Impossible to run.
But the good news is that
IT HASN'T SNOWED AND STUCK YET!

Dear Northern Utah,
Keep the weather this way and we may actually come out of this college relationship as friends.

P.S.  Being a Grad student is a million times better than undergrad.
I have three finals.
Two are take home (and already done)
One is in class.
No testing center.
Boom.

Reason 155: Graduate School Barbie

December 6, 2011.

Found this on Pinterest.  It is a gem.  Please read and understand that this is exactly like my life.  Lol!

A new gift idea for your loved ones: Graduate School Barbie (TM).

Graduate School Barbie comes in two forms: Delusional Master's Barbie (TM) and Ph.D. Masochist Barbie (TM).

Every Graduate School Barbie comes with these fun filled features guaranteed to delight and entertain for hours: Grad School Barbie comes out of the box with a big grin on her face that turns into a frown after 2 weeks or her first advisor meeting (whichever comes first). She also has adorable black circles under her delightfully bloodshot eyes.

Comes with two outfits: a grubby pair of blue jeans and 5 year old gap T-shirt, and a floppy pair of gray sweatpants with a matching "I hate my life" T-shirt. Grad School Barbie talks! Just press the button on her left hand and hear her say such upbeat grad school phrases like, "Yes, Professor, It'll be done by tomorrow", "I'd love to rewrite" and "Why didn't I just get a job, I could have been making $40,000 a year by now if I had just started working with a Bachelor's. But noooooo, I chose to further my education, I wish somebody would drop a bomb on the school so that I'd have an excuse to stop working on my degree that's sucking every last drop of life force out of my withered and degraded excuse for a soul..." (9V lithium batteries sold separately)

Grad School Barbie is anatomically correct to teach kids about the exciting changes that come with pursuing a higher education. Removable panels on Barbie's head and torso allow you to watch as her cerebellum fries to a crispy brown, her heart race 150 beats per minute, and her stomach lining gradually dissolve into nothing. Deluxe Barbie comes with specially designed eye ducts. Just add a little water, and watch Grad School Barbie burst into tears at random intervals. Fun for the whole family!

Other accessories include:

Grad School Barbie's Fun Fridge (TM) Well stocked with microwave popcorn, Coca-Cola, Healthy Choice Bologna (99% fat free!),and a small bottle of Mattel Brand Rum (tm).

Grad School Barbie's Medicine Cabinet comes in Fabulous (pepto-bismal) pink and contains Barbie sized bottles of Advil, St. Johns Wort, Zantac, and your choice of three fun anti-anxiety drugs! (Barbie Medicine Cabinet not available without a prescription).

Grad School Barbie's Computer Workstation. Comes with miniature obsolete PC (in pink of course), rickety desk, and over a dozen miniature Dr. Pepper cans to decorate your workstation with (Dr. Pepper deposit not included in price. Tech support sold separately).

And Grad School Barbie is not alone! Order now and you'll get two of Barbie's great friends! GRADUATE ADVISOR KEN, Barbie's mentor and advisor in her quest for knowledge, higher education and decreased self esteem.

Grad Advisor Ken (tm) comes with a supply of red pens and a permanent frown. Press the button to hear Grad Advisor Ken deliver such wisdom to Barbie as "I need an update on your progress," "I don't think you're ready to defend yet", and "This is no where near ready for publication."

Buy 3 or more dolls, and you can have Barbie's Thesis Committee! (Palm Pilot and tenure sold separately.)

REAL JOB SKIPPER, When Barbie needs to talk, she knows that she can always count on her good friend Real Job Skipper (tm), who got a job after getting her bachelor degree. Press the button to hear Real Job Skipper say, "Sometimes I wish I went for my masters degree" and "Work is so hard! I had to work a half an hour of overtime!" Real Job Skipper's Work Wardrobe and Savings account sold separately.

WARNING: Do not place Grad Student Barbie and Real Job Skipper too close to each other, as there have been several cases of children leaving the room and coming back to find Barbie's hands mysteriously fused to Skipper's throat.

Reason 154: Decorating!

Ignoring all adult-like responsibility to decorate for Christmas.

We got a live tree! It is small (5 feet) but perfect for our apartment! More pictures to come when decorating is complete!

Reason 152: National Championships

Saturday, November 19, 2011

This is where I am right now.  Congrats to the BYU Men's and Women's teams for qualifying for the National Championship!  We knew the men were coming, they automatically qualified by taking 1st place at the Mountain Region race.  The women, however, got pushed in by criteria points and all these other complicated things.  Regardless- here we are in Terre Haute!

To see the preview for the race, go here:

Getting here was kind of brutal.  Meet at BYU at 5 am, drive to SLC, fly to Denver, 2 hour layover, fly to Indy, LOOOONG drive to Terre Haute (road construction).  Thus the night ended in a severe migraine while trying to eat dinner at Texas Roadhouse.  Speaking of, our normal schedule of event on Cross Country trips is:
Travel
Run
Eat
Sleep

It is amazing how *little* time it seems like you have in a day when you sleep until 11 am.  Today for lunch we went to Grand Traverse Pie Company.  Yum.  Mediterranean (sp?) sandwich and some blackberry peach cobbler.  Then tonight we had the banquet with all of the schools.  Frank Shorter, the 1972 Olympic gold medalist in the marathon, was our speaker tonight.  So cool.  I wish I could still run as much as I did my sophomore year of college.

Tomorrow?  Nike tent, church, fireside, homework.  It is so hard to do homework when we travel.

Reason 151: Athletic Trainer

Tuesday, November 8, 2011.

Oh.. you're a trainer??
(NO! I'm an Athletic Trainer, not a trainer)
Oh, that's cool, I wanted to do that. What do you make?
 "WHAT DO I MAKE??"

I make an ankle sprain that some say should take four weeks to get your child back on the field, playable in a week

I can make driving in a golf cart with lights look cool.

I can make your rehab program after a total knee so you can run in that marathon you've always dreamed.

I can make an ankle taping before your kid misses 2 mins of play.

I can make saving your childs life easier by explaining a "rung bell" isnt normal, it can be deadly.

I can make wearing a fanny pack the new black.

I can help you, and your child, survive a heart attack.

I can look at a wrestler's pee and tell them how much water to drink

I can make an athlete bigger, faster, better

I can translate "doctorese" from "torn anterior talofibular ligament" into ankle sprain.

I went to college to EARN A DEGREE in more than just "water providing" but also injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, administration, and overall problem listening.

And I do it because I love my athletes.

A
nd I love my profession.

Today, I might ice your knee, tomorrow I might save your life.

I hope I make a difference.

What do you make?

Reason 150: Hannah has a blog!

Sunday, November 6, 2011.

I would not be doing my job as an older sister if I didn't promote Hannah's new blog!

Seriously- you don't want to miss this girls blog!

Reason 149: Halloween!

October 31, 2011.

Posted late.  Don't be alarmed- this is truly a post about Halloween.

I spent all of college HATING Halloween.  Like- volunteering to work because I wanted to be away from it.  In my opinion it was an excuse for girls to dress like skanks and college students to throw crazy parties. Dumb, right?  I didn't realize how much kids make the holiday awesome.

But this year we live in a REAL neighborhood and attend a FAMILY ward!  So Halloween definitely returned to its awesomeness.

The day before, I made Jason carve pumpkins with me.
His?  The beach and a hammock.
Mine?  The Grim Reaper of the Packers.  Systematically destroying all other NFL teams.

For Halloween, Jason dressed up as Indiana Jones.
Sexy, huh?
Thanks to the Fellow's for letting us borrow the sweet hat!

My little Hannah love was a hippie.
WAY COOL!
Looking good, sister.
Do your earlobes hurt after wearing those earrings?

Aaron was an old man.
But also kinda looks like Charlie Chaplain.
Cutie.

Aaron and Hannah were in St. George, but I had to share their adorable pictures.
Jason sat outside (it was a beautiful night) with the Indiana Jones theme song playing as he handed out candy.
I was cooking homemade pizza and almond poppyseed cupcakes.
I love that kid.  He is so awesome to get in the spirit.

Cheers to Halloween only getting better from here on out!

Reason 148: Woah.

"A diamond is a piece of charcoal that handled stress exceptionally well." -Unknown

How cool is that quote?  I am a really big fan of that.

School is crazy.
Work is crazy.
Writing a thesis is crazy.
Managing undergraduate students is crazy.
Traveling is crazy.

That is 5x crazy.

I have never studied so hard or worked so hard in my life.  Want to know what the great news is?
Being a graduate student is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY better than being an undergraduate.
Yep.
Just living the dream.

Reason 147: Love what you do.

Wednesday, October 26, 2011.

"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."-Confucius

Life is so crazy.  I wonder how many posts I have said that in?  There is not really time to blog.  Half of the problem is that I can't really blog about much.  When your job deals with medical care and people can easily narrow down your list of possible patient's, you can't really talk vaguely about injuries either.

Soo.... in general, track and cross country are wonderful :).  I have seen some very cool injuries, learned a lot from everyone I work with, and I really enjoy all of the athletes I work with.  It's amazing how much you can learn from people when you spend so much time with them.

We have traveled to...

Park City

Utah State

Minneapolis, Minnesota
Roy Griak Invitational
(Photo from Flo Track)

South Bend, Indiana
Notre Dame Invitational

Madison, Wisconsin
Wisconsin Invitational

Traveling with the cross country team has been awesome.  Nice hotels, nice restaurants, plenty of time to explore the cities we were in. In South Bend, I got to spend time with Uncle Joe and Aunt Carol and eat a delicious dinner with them!  I also got to tour Notre Dame Athletics complex.  Super cool, I love that school.

This weekend- San Francisco.  West Coast Conference Championships.

146: Fallen off the blogging world...

October 2, 2011

My poor, poor little sister.  I have accidentally fallen off the blogging world since June and she is imploding.  So here are some highlights and a written commitment to try and do better!  Purely pictures, but that is less work for me.

June 17-21: St. George trip with Mary!

July 3, 2011: Jason's birthday!  (And surprise party on June 27)

Homemade apple pie.  I am the coolest- so proud of that.

July 2, 2011: Stadium of Fire!
 Brad Paisley!
My talented little Hannah was a stadium of fire dancer!
 The light dance. Wayyyy cool.
 Liberty Bell
 My pretty momma.
 My super good looking hubby.
My cute family!
